Whether you like it or not, your employer has control over the computers you use during the work hours. Even if there are no blocks against some of the social media sites you use, you should be aware that legal action could be taken against you for using Facebook or other sites. The precedent set has not yet allowed an employer to take legal action against an employee for simply using these websites because they don’t cause irreparable damage to the business. You should be aware, however, that any viruses or malicious programs introduced through a social networking site will be solely your responsibility.

You should understand that the equipment you use at work belongs to the employer, and you can only use it for work purposes. This is especially true if the sites you want to visit are blocked or you are told they are forbidden. To visit them anyway after being instructed not to means that you are explicitly breaking the rules. Any punishment at that point will be deserved. To ensure that the punishment fits the crime, you may need the assistance of an attorney.

Fighting the Judgment

If you feel the punishment for your computer use is too harsh, you can seek legal representation. This punishment could range from being written up to fired, and could even go so far as a legal suit. You must be prepared and ready to protect yourself from any possibility, especially if your use of computer equipment was entirely innocent.
