Carney R. Shegerian, founder of Shegerian & Associates, a Santa Monica-based law firm specializing in employee rights, has issued a statement describing the results of a recent AARP study as an important reminder for US workers that age discrimination is alive and well in the American workplace.
The study, conducted by AARP, the nonprofit advocacy group for people aged 50 and over, revealed that almost two-thirds of workers ages 45 to 74 surveyed say they have either seen or personally experienced age discrimination in the workplace. Most believe age discrimination begins when workers are in their 50s, the study also determined.
The telephone survey took place last November and December with a national sample of more than 1,500 adults ages 45-74.
“The results of this recent study by AARP are very telling,” said Shegerian. “That almost two-thirds of those US workers surveyed have either seen age discrimination or been discriminated against themselves shows that we still have a very serious issue today in terms of cases of age discrimination not being reported. What these employees and their employers need to know is that employers in the US cannot discriminate against their employees based upon their age. To do so is illegal, and could lead to dramatic fiscal consequences for the organizations that house the discriminatory behavior.”
